IVF Success Rates

How should IVF success be measured?

Pregnancy rate and healthy development do not mean the same as birth rate. The probability of pregnancy is higher than the probability of live birth. However, some IVF clinics calculate pregnancy as the same as birth rate. Biochemical pregnancy differences are a very common situation. Biochemical pregnancy is a pregnancy that is detected by blood and urine tests but does not show up on ultrasound. The goal of IVF treatment is not to achieve pregnancy. The goal is to ensure that a healthy baby is born. IVF success rate is evaluated by the fact that a healthy baby opens his eyes to life with the IVF method.

Why is in vitro fertilization performed?

Infertility is now a type of disease that can be treated with today's conditions. Appropriate treatment methods, staying calm and patient, and approaching events positively will make many mothers and fathers smile. IVF treatment can be applied for many reasons. For these reasons, factors that affect pregnancy may also occur. These factors are listed as follows;

  • Woman's age

  • Some problems with male sperm

  • Diseases that develop outside the reproductive organs

  • Whether there has been a pregnancy before

  • Whether there has been a previous miscarriage

  • How long the marriage has been going on

Many factors such as can prevent pregnancy from occurring. For IVF success, it is first necessary to evaluate the conditions of the mother and father candidate. All preferred clinics definitely have a pregnancy rate for IVF. However, the success rates of a center that accepts patients whose infertility can be easily and immediately overcome and a center that has achieved difficult treatments may not be the same.

Before applying to the center, it should be examined which infertility diseases it accepts or not. In vitro fertilization success rates are also highly related to the laboratory conditions of the centers. Laboratory conditions are the most important factor affecting the progress of pregnancy. There is a certain chance rate for each prospective mother and father in in vitro fertilization treatment. However, it would be beneficial to try the treatment several times in order to catch the possibility of pregnancy. However, in prospective mothers and fathers, the mother and father should be reviewed again for the trial to be performed after the 3rd in vitro fertilization trial. It would be useful to perform new tests when necessary.

In order to achieve success in IVF treatment, unknown factors are also related to known factors. If the patient has had two or three miscarriages before, the success rate of the treatment may decrease. However, even if more than one attempt is made in treatments where no problems are detected, failure is a possibility. Even if the success rate is low in IVF examinations, the result may be positive. In some cases, mothers and fathers who cannot have a baby with IVF treatment may have a baby on their own in the future.

If we need to give some rates for pregnancy success; If the father has a problem with azoospermia cells, the success rate can vary between 0-20%. If the mother has had several miscarriages before, the probability of success can unfortunately be very low. If both the mother is older and the father has azoospermia, the success rate drops to 0-20%. When evaluating the success rates of in vitro fertilization clinics, in addition to researching the doctor and pregnancy rates and getting an idea, mothers and fathers-to-be should also review their own situations. It will be useful to make a decision after these situations. It is necessary to be financially and psychologically ready for treatment. This always means starting one step ahead. It should be started knowing that it will not be successful after the first treatment.

What do pregnancy rates with in vitro fertilization mean?

With the increase in factors such as high radiation, unhealthy ready-made foods, hair dyes and similar heavy chemicals taken into the body, the possibility of getting pregnant in Turkey is decreasing. According to research, it is stated that 15 out of 100 women cannot get pregnant. Naturally, structural features and various physical conditions that are inherently like this are also included in this rate. However, despite all these events, it is also known that with the developing technology, it has become possible for mothers and fathers to have babies. With in vitro fertilization technology, even in people with a zero pregnancy rate, one in three can get pregnant.

So, what are the chances of success for expectant mothers who want to get pregnant with IVF? The success rate of IVF treatment is almost 40% worldwide when all factors are taken into account. However, the same rate is not seen in every person. Many factors such as a person's health condition, age, and weight play a determining role in IVF success rates.

There is a widespread belief that the probability of having a baby, especially with IVF, is a maximum of 50%. However, this belief is not true, because the conditions of the mother are very important in understanding the success rate of IVF. The age of the mother is a very decisive factor in this regard. The reason for this is that changes occur in ovarian reserves with age. For a mother between the ages of 20 and 30, the IVF success rate will be around 70%. However, in a person over the age of 30, the ovarian reserves that gradually begin to decrease will reduce the rate of pregnancy with normal methods to 2% after the age of 40. However, with IVF, the pregnancy rate of a 40-year-old mother has increased to 20%.

Does the mother's past affect the success rate of IVF?

Apart from all these factors, another reason that stems from the mother-to-be may be to have a surgery related to the uterus. If the mother-to-be has previously had a surgery for uterine cancer or cyst formation, her response to IVF treatment may be low, even if she is still young, due to the decrease in her egg reserves. In such cases, the probability of IVF success drops to between 5 and 10%.

Does the success rate of IVF change in male-related infertility?

Even if in vitro fertilization treatment is applied in cases of male-related infertility, the male's effect on success or failure in pregnancy is almost zero. The man's age or other factors do not affect the situation much. In addition to all these, in recent years, experiments have been conducted in America with an application called the chromosomal anomaly screening method (CCS) to enable older women to have babies. In these studies, the abnormal chromosome production status of female patients over a certain age was taken into consideration. Experiments were conducted by preferring non-abnormal chromosomes. As a result of these experiments, the success rate of in vitro fertilization, which is normally 33% in older women, was increased to 61%. In other words, if the mother-to-be can produce an egg with 46 chromosomes, the pregnancy rate can be increased with this CCS application.

Apart from all these, only 6 out of 30 expectant mothers who got pregnant with this method had a miscarriage by the 3rd month. This means that the pregnancy period achieved approximately 80% success.
