Hair Dye and Epilation During Pregnancy

Scientific studies, although not definitive, have not reported any negative effects of hair dyeing during pregnancy on the baby. Hair dyes contain many chemicals. These are absorbed from the scalp and mixed into the bloodstream. For this reason, some doctors tell their patients that they can dye their hair at the end of the first trimester. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has announced that hair dyeing is not harmful during pregnancy. However, it has been added that the data is not sufficient. For this reason, it is useful to be cautious and wait until the end of the first trimester.

Can waxing and/or epilation be done during pregnancy? Is laser epilation harmful?

Some pregnant women complain of increased hair growth during pregnancy. Although this increased hair growth caused by the changing hormonal balance during pregnancy will largely decrease with the end of pregnancy, it creates cosmetic concerns for the pregnant woman. It is clear that the classic method, namely temporary hair removal with waxing, is not harmful. It has a very old history and is clearly safe during pregnancy. However, there are not enough studies showing the reliability of hair removal creams made from different chemicals. The chemicals in these creams can be absorbed from the skin and pass into the bloodstream and placenta. Therefore, it is not safe to use.

The epilation method is done with laser beams and this beam cannot penetrate the tissue like x-rays. In other words, it is effective on the point where it is applied. There is no harm in doing it after the first three months of pregnancy.
