What Is Infertility? What Are The Causes Of Infertility?

What Is Infertility

1- What is infertility?

Infertility can be expressed as a female who cannot conceive a child or has had a child before but can’t get pregnant again.  Approximately %25 of women, can face an infertility problem during a period of their life. At the same time, the age that woman are most fertile is 25. In general, after the age of 35, women’s fertility levels will decrease dramatically.

A couple will have a %57 chance to obtain pregnancy in a 3 month period. Once it has been a period of 6 months, this rate will rise to %72. After a year this rate will rise to %85, however after 2 years, the rate drops drastically. That is why the couple should consult a doctor if pregnancy is not achieved by this time.

2- What are the causes of female infertility?

3- What are the other factors related to infertility?

4- Allergic reasons

Some allergic reactions, may cause infertility as well. However, the identification and treatment of this condition is quite difficult. Allergic reasons, can be found in the sperm or in the mucus. These allergic reactions are known as the anti-sperm antibodies. The treatment possibility and the success rate after every individual’s treatment can be same as an individual which does not go under any kind of treatment.

5- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes

If the fallopian tubes are blocked, this situation will prevent the union of the sperm and ovum. In this case, fertilization and pregnancy cannot occur. The damaged fallopian tube can be a result of an infection, endometriosis, or previous surgery. Also, the fallopian tubes can be damaged if an ectopic pregnancy has occurred before.

6- Ovulation problems

The most common cause of infertility seen in women are ovulation disorders. If ovulation does not occur, fertilization and pregnancy cannot be achieved. Ovulation disorders are the absence of ovulation or an irregular ovulation. The problems seen in the menstrual cycle can indicate a problem of an ovulation disorder. However, even when there aren’t any problems seen in the menstrual cycle, ovulation problems can be seen.

Ovulation disorders, can be examined in 3 groups. These are;

  1. The lack of hormones that stimulate ovum production in the ovaries: in this case the female will not have a period.
  2. The excess secretion of the prolactin hormone: these types of conditions usually indicate that there is a benign tumour in this area.  Benign tumours, can be removed with surgical procedures.
  3. Polycystic ovary syndrome: the typical form of this disease, the female’s periods will be irregular and sparse which is a cause that will prevent pregnancy.

7- Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition resulting from the appearance of endometrial tissue outside the womb and causing pelvic pain. Endometriosis is usually seen on the surface of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

The most common symptoms of endometriosis are pain during and before the period, pain during sexual intercourse and an irregular menstrual cycle.

In almost half of the women with endometriosis, treatment is needed to get pregnant. Also, %25 of  women who are referred to infertility centres are diagnosed with endometriosis.

8- Cervical problems

The infection seen in this area and secretions (mucus) disorders, can cause of infertility. The mucus that is secreted from the cervix, makes it easier for sperm to move through the genital path. The quantity and quality of the mucus which is under the influence of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone can change during the period. Benign tumours such as polyps, or surgical procedures that have been applied to the cervical area may cause infertility.

9- How long is an infertility treatment?

An infertility treatment protocol should go on for at least 6 months. The couple should also be patient during this procedure. The male’s affect on infertility should also be considered and both the male and female should go under examination before starting any kind of treatment.
