Does IVF Threaten The Health Of The Female?

does-ivf-threaten-the-health-of-the-femaleThe possible risks that can be seen during IVF

Like all treatment techniques IVF treatment also has a rate around 1-2% of unwantedconditions which can occur during the treatment. The most common problems that the patient will face during this method is weight gain, enlargement of abdomen, abdominal pain, and an irregular ovum growth. As a low risk “over-stimulation Syndrome” (OHSS=ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome) can be seen in some patients as well. After the IVF treatment, it is possible for multiple pregnancies to occur which will increase the risks of premature birth and the birth weight of the baby being very low.

Apart from the problems stated above, there are no vital effects of IVF treatment which will affect both the mother and child’s health.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, is the body reacting to the hormone therapy that is being applied. As a result the oestrogen hormone in the body will excessively increase and excessive growth in the ovaries can be seen.

OHSS symptoms can be stated as enlargement of abdomen, abdominal pain, and growth of the ovum, plus symptoms such as;

Excessive stimulation syndrome can occur within 3-7 days of the treatment, however it can also occur after 12-17 days. OHSS monitored at light and medium levels can be controlled by a protein-rich diet, drinking plenty of water and getting enough rest without the need of going to the hospital. OHSS experienced at an advanced level a hospital support is needed.

During IVF treatment, regular blood test is performed and the patient’s weight and abdominal measurements and the effectiveness of the treatment is monitored. If the fluid levels are too high in the abdomen, the fluid might need draining from outside by a specialist. The healing process will take between 10 days and 3 weeks.

OHSS During IVF Treatment

In order to avoid OHSS before starting the IVF treatment and determining the hormone therapy dose, factors such as the female’s age, ovarian reserve status, weight, and if available, previously applied treatments are analyzed. OHSS only occurs in 1% of IVF patients.

Medication used during IVF and its side effects

With drugs used in IVF treatment increasing the levels of various hormones in the body and eliminating infertility in this process is aimed. These hormones are thought to trigger ovarian, uterine and breast cancer due to the effect of the medication. However, a connection between cancer types and IVF medication has not been stated by any professional.

Females who do not experience pregnancy and giving birth are under higher risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer. These forms of cancer does not occur with a short term of high oestrogen levels but with long term high hormone levels.
